by John Updike
excerpt from A Child's Calendar

The days are short,
The sun a spark
Hung thin between
The dark and dark.

:: gift of snow, view from my front porch ::

Fat snowy footsteps
Track the floor
And parkas pile up
Near the door.

:: the center of our home ::

The river is
A frozen place
Held still beneath
The trees' black lace.

:: view from our bedroom window ::

A Child's Calendar by John Updike is one of our favorite books of children's poetry. Some other treasures by my chair right now are The Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes, Playful Learning by Mariah Bruehl, The Butterfly by Patricia Polacco, Feeding the Whole Family by Cynthia Lair, and Teaching Hearts, Training Minds by Starr Meade. I am finding moments to read...and, oh, those moments are gifts.
