We are in Vietnam! We arrived at the airport at 11:00 last night and had difficulty getting anyone to point us toward our hotel. We received the following information: "It is a short walk to the hotel," "The hotel is inside the airport," "The hotel is a taxi ride away." We ended up with a sympathetic government official (in full uniform), escorting us on the LONG walk to the hotel. He didn't speak much English, so we weren't entirely certain he was taking us to the hotel or if we were following him home! We dragged about 200 pounds of luggage several blocks of cracked and rutted cement, and we were never happier to see a hotel! We were absolutely exhausted, pouring sweat. It is gray and muggy and hot... You can taste the air.
From where I pound on this computer, we can hear car/motorcycle horns, screeching brakes, bird song, and a beautiful language that is hopelessly lost on us! We are preparing to go to breakfast but are a bit nervous as our hotel (for which we are thankful) is a bit, um, rustic. The locks were not working (on the shared bathroom either), and there were mouse droppings and mosquitoes! (We soaked ourselves in DEET before bed.) After only about 4 hours of sleep, we are wired...nervous, excited, and so very, very close.
Those of you near my boys, kiss them for us! We will try to post more photos soon, but we ran into problems at the Hanoi airport and won't be able to try again until Danang. Our flight leaves soon, so we are off to breakfast. So thankful for your prayers...
